- WATER POLLUTION
- Water
Pollution doesn't just effect my local community, or even
Florida but like a domino effect, it effects the whole world around us.
Water Pollution is an enormous problem and puts us in huge risk involving
our very own health but also harms marine wildlife, such
as endangering manatees

- By reaching out and talking to my family and talking to
my local community discussing the topic of Water Pollution, my family
agrees that Water Pollution is a huge concern among human beings,
and Marine wildlife. It’s very clear that today’s society is
aware of Water Pollution but yet has seem as they were blinded by this
issue, not doing much to prevent this environmental issue.
- How Water
Pollution affects local residents and Households
The water that is
supplied to our kitchen foist comes from lakes, springs, rivers, If
the bodies of water are infected by pollution this becomes a huge health
concern for Households and residents how depend on water to survive.
- How Water Pollution affects Businesses
Water Pollution takes a huge toll in
overseas jobs (fisherman) providing barely any income for the fishermen. It
affects the market too, if water pollution is very bad, the fish brought in by
fishermen will decrease, causing sales in stores to decrease, which consumers
will demand more, and that will cause a shortage. Because of harsh Algal blooms
in the ocean which creates Red tides affects local businesses as well because
tourist will repel from beaches causing loss in profit, affecting their income.
- How Water Pollution affects Government at
the local, state, and national levels
The Government is the
mainly responsible for finding a way to make sure
that chemicals or bacteria is not in the water sold to consumers,
making sure the water is and healthy to consume.
- How Water Pollution affects the rest of
the world
Water Pollution effects the world, it
affects human’s health, to polluted water that farmers use to water their
crops, causing their crops they depend on to die. Polluted water affects the
money fishermen bring in, because if there is less fish, it decreases their
pay, businesses will lose profits and will fall into a drought because red
tides will drive away tourist and it also affects helpless animals that live in
the ocean, by the harsh chemicals of phosphorus and nitrogen mixed with
fertilizer create toxic algal blooms, algal short lives and when it dies,
starts a decaying process and therefore the decaying process sucks up the
oxygen in water, which result in harmless fish, crabs, plants, and even
manatees to die, or algae gets so thick that it clogs up fishes gills leaving
them to suffocate, also algae is one of the reasons manatees die. Manatees
consume food that algal grows on, and the toxic harmful chemicals paralyze them
causing them not to be able to come to surface for oxygen leading to many
deaths of manatees, leading them on their way to becoming extinct.
- Water Pollution affects resources, good
and services and finances
It can affect natural
resources like farmers crops, the crop depends on water to flourish and if the
water used to nourish the crops are contaminated, farmers will have to put a
stop to using the water, putting their crop endanger and their income. To help
filter the water services will have to be funded by the government, and the
money they get from taxes they can help fund researches and programs to help
get involved to help fix the solution.
* What are the necessary conditions for any
possible solution to work
The necessary conditions for any possible solution to work, would
to be an understanding of the importance of the cleaner water and why we need
to keep bodies or water cleaner of pollution (getting people aware of the
problem so it can be fixed)
* Are there any labor or budget concerns?
Yes, one main cause of Water Pollution is outbreaks of algae, in
Florida this cost from $1.3 to $10.5 billion dollars, each year. Even with
Water Pollution increasing, Government programs funding this environmental
concern need to invest more money in to finding solutions to cure
Water Pollution's and this means more labor and time needs to be put
into the project to find a way to stop Water Pollution
from spiraling out of control.
* Does the public need to be aware of and support the solution?
Yes indeed the public should be aware of this environmental
concern and should defiantly support the solution because we use water for
almost everything like cooking, drinking, and doing dishes. Polluted Water is a
huge health risk and if not treated may lead to health and quality of many
lives of humans and marine wildlife deteriorating as a result.
What challenges are there to implementing each
solution?
The challenges to implementing to each solution would be
getting people to see how harmful Water Pollution is and to getting them to get
more involved, and getting the Government’s approval. For example it’s a cycle,
when people get involved, the next challenge is to get the people agree to the
solutions and with them working hard to fight for the issue, somehow their
voice will be heard and the government will have to do something about it and
attend to finding a solution to this issue.
How else might you judge possible solutions
against each other?
I would analyze all the possible solutions by comparing how expensive it
is, will the chosen solution help fix Polluted Water and will it help
the economy in the long run.
What do your parents say about the issue?
Talking to my parents about Water Pollution, my
parents feel that Water Pollution is tremendous concern just not in our
community, county, or even state but affects the whole world. If Water
Pollution continues to spiral out of control it is going to affect the health
of human beings, marine wildlife, and takes a huge toll on farmers crops,
decreasing production of their agricultural goods. Without Water that is
healthy for consumption, humanity cannot survive!
Should possible externalities factor into the chosen solution?
Cleaner water will be provided to marine
wildlife and humans, clearing red tides would cause enjoyment of the beach and
attract more tourists, and business will thrive having more business from the
local beaches, saving their business by providing more consumers who demand
their products, increasing their profit.
--> Things we can do to address Water Pollution
First we can start
off by get people more involved, have people use their knowledge and outspoken
voices to educate the public on the environmental issue of Water
Pollution. Since water pollution in Florida is bad and will only keep getting
worse if not treated, apposing stricter laws and fines for dumping waste or
man-made trash into rivers, lakes, pounds, springs and oceans. Especially huge
factories that dump their waste into bodies of water that people depend on.
Factories should find a better alternative to dispose their trash that isn't going
to hurt the earth.
--> What others can do
Don't be the cause of Water Pollution, but instead give the earth a
helping hand. If you come across man-made waste or
trash, try disposing it safely into a trash bin or recycling bin
to help the earth be less polluted, and how knows maybe someone will see
you and will be inspired to lend a helping hand. Farmers should also take
precautions when fertilizing their crops, and avoid fertilizing
on summer rainy days. Plants can only intake so much and where do the rest of
the fertilizer go? Well the rest runs off into nearby lakes, pounds, streams
and rivers. The fertilizer that then ends up in lakes, rivers, springs and
pounds will create nutrients for algae to feed off of, creating algae breakouts.
--> Multiple perspectives on the best way to address Water
Pollution?
Make sure there is enough knowledge on Water Pollution, and reaching
out to others nearby about the issue. When the issue is seen we can keep
recycling and helping to make the water clear of trash and healthier. Finally
getting businesses to realize that their way of getting rid of trash
affects our world and many who depend on water to survive for example humans,
marine wildlife, and farmers who depend on water to grow their crops.
What positive or negative externalities does this issue present at
each sector of the economy?
Positive externalities for Households would be Educating the
community about the issue of Water Pollution, this we therefore
be a domino effect and everyone will be talking about the issue, Households
want to make a difference, so they have a yearly fundraiser that will raise
money towards research and expenses. By investing in a
stock that’s funding goes to the support of Water Pollution can have its
benefits, which households would get from. Lastly Households will become stricter
on the fact of recycling and will motivate those who don't recycle or
others who might not recycle as often as they should, because they will see all
the good that comes out of recycling. Some negative externalities for
Households are that others may feel as we have enough water then we need and
would not like to approach people about Water Pollution. Or that
society may think that there are enough government funding that goes into
programs to help water pollution, not wanting to donate and not invest their
time or money. Lastly people way forget the importance of recycling and will
continue to pollute water.
Positive externalities for businesses will be the help from
the organization donating money into their company, allowing
them to expand. They can use the money donated from the organization to make
shirts that say "Help Water Pollution by pitching in." Therefore
their business will flourish with new customers who will support the
issue of Water Pollution. The negative externalities for Businesses
will be that with some many customers business will be booming is
producing more and more waste. Also as a cheap alternative they will dump their
waste into nearby streams, rivers, and pounds. Finally people who will
consume the toxic water may become very sick.
Positive externalities for
The Government are they will use the taxes collected from the shirts
to fund programs, most of the money goes to researchers and the labor to help
clear up Water Pollution, and filters are provided to make water consumable. On
the negative side of externalities, the Government sets very high standards and
strict regulations, when trading. Setting taxes on the production of the
shirts. By hiring researchers and the cost of labor cost a lot in their budget.
Causing the cost of water businesses sell to consumers to increase in price.
Positive externalities for the rest of the world is the community
will come together to start an organization that applies to helping
Water Pollution and fulfilling the goal of having sanitized water not
only for humans but for animals and even help save farmers crops, by donating money into the
organization and spending time on going to local waters such as lakes, beaches,
and rivers and help to pick up garbage waste. The organization will
donate money to the company to produce shirts. The company will Export
t-shirts to international consumers, which more money spent the more donations
are collected to help water pollution. On the negative side
of externalities, the rest of the world Coming together very closely
as a community and putting a lot of time and effort may become a job almost,
scaring people away from this big commitment. The company may become
greedy and may want more money invested or a bigger percentage in the profit oh
the shirts because they feel that a lot of time and work was put into
producing the shirts. Lastly as the company grows, the prices will eventually
rise for labor for creating plethora of T-shirts and material needed,
decreasing demand.
- What incentives do
individuals, businesses, and government have to act on each possible solution?
- Individuals
By
people educating the community on how water pollution affects it has among us
and how to prevent Water Pollution; people will be motivated on making a change
by stepping in being leaders and lending a helping hand, this results as having
cleaner water for society. Also by stepping in open heartedly taking
charge by stepping stepping in and lending a helping hand this
results as having cleaner water. With the environment cleaner this
will lead to a healthier world for today's society to live in.
-
Businesses
Will have to make
sure they aren't selling water that has not been filtered water (polluted water) to customers. With costumers impressed with fresh water
served, this will put a good name out there for the business. With local
residents, tourist and customers attracted to the wonderful products
sold will lure in more customers and more profits.
-
The Government
The
Government is in charge when it comes to making sure a project is done
correctly and safe. Investing money to a fund to a program which will make sure
the water is filtered and the water that comes out of
kitchen foists is purified, and bottle water is consumable. The
government can then reach out to countries less fortunate and provide fresh
clean water to them.
-What are
the externalities, both positive and negative that could result from each
possible solution?
*Positive Externalities
1. Businesses
producing and selling cleanser water will make a great reputation for their name
attracting more new customers.
2. The
Government taking action and finding a solution to filter water, will
be ideal to other countries who are in need of fresh water.
3. The
Government and people will pitch in together to help water pollution rather
than focusing on matters who's concerns aren't as high as water pollution
today.
*Negative Externalities
1. Research and labor fees will rise as they
work hard to find solutions.
2. People might feel that since 70 percent of
salt water oceans make up the Earth's surface, why not take advantage.
3. Businesses dumping
waste/trash into waters ways to find a less costing way to get rid of it may not
think of the affect it has on today's health of humans
and animals who depend on water for a living.
Analyze and Choose
How does each possible solution for your chosen
issue meet or fail to meet each of your criteria?
Solution 1- Stop
polluting water instead recycle to help the environment! There is not a lot of
effort needed and results will be seen immediately.
Solution 2- Gathering
together as a community trying to prevent water pollution; spreading knowledge
known about the negative outcome and how water pollution affects the world and
a plethora of people. But the community can’t do this alone but needs someone
with a higher rank like reaching out to the Mayor with a letter stating the
issue about landfills, will be an easy task because our voices were noticed. If
the Mayor takes proper matters to the situation the results can be seen
quickly, it would cost a lot but in the end our environment will be much safer
and nicer and we can enjoy the beauties of Mother Nature, subtracting the
harmful pollution.
Solution 3- Factories
should find other ways to dispose their hazardous trash, and waste. This might
be hard because some people might not be opened minded to the ideas of
following this procedure. This will take a lot of time and money to convince
them that just because dumping waste is a cheap way to dispose of industrial
waste, this affects people, jobs, marine wildlife, the markets, and even can
lead to endangering manatees, making them instinct.
-Based on your research,
which is the best solution to turn into action? Explain why you made
this choice over the other possible solutions
Based on my findings the Best solutions to turn into action
would have to be both recycling and cleaning landfills, by getting the Mayor to
take proper matters of the situation, landfills will be nonexistent and
polluted water will be less polluted. Both these solutions will lend a hand to
each other, helping cure water pollution. I picked these two solutions because
they stand out to me more because just these tiny steps will have an enormous
impact. From cleaning up landfills and people taking recycling more seriously,
Factories may then also want to be the change that we see in the world, and
this will be ideal because by the world changing not to pollute water,
Factories will not have to feel pressured or forced to make the decision.
